From Manhattan Roots to Zoo Legend Born in Manhattan and raised in Queens, New York, to a Cuban father and a mother of Colombian and German descent, Ron Magill felt like an outsider. But he found refuge in animals. While others played sports, Ron watched Wild Kingdom, dreaming of African plains and jungle adventures. That love led him to the University of Florida to study zoology. He left college early to take a job as a zookeeper at Crandon Park Zoo, before the construction of Miami Metro Zoo. It wasn’t glamorous—he shoveled stalls and scrubbed enclosures—but it was the beginning of a lifelong mission.

Becoming the Face of Wildlife Education Over time, Ron evolved into Zoo Miami’s voice. His energy, storytelling, and humor turned him into a media favorite. He appeared on Good Morning America, CNN, National Geographic Explorer, and Spanish-language shows like Sábado Gigante. He even answered wild animal questions on The Dan Le Batard Show. Every appearance had one goal: to connect people to animals and inspire protection.

Ron Magill Conservation Endowment Understanding that media reach isn’t enough, Ron put his money where his heart is. He founded the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment at Zoo Miami Foundation. It has raised millions to protect wildlife in their natural habitats. From African cheetahs to Amazonian eagles, Ron’s legacy spans continents. Locally, he fought against construction that threatened endangered pine rocklands near Zoo Miami. Even when told not to speak, he stood his ground: “I’d rather be fired than be a hypocrite.”
